I Love You - an attempt at gypsy jazz (02:53)
I'm learning how to play gypsy jazz the hard (some would say the right) way - listening to records and videos and learning from them lick by lick because I can hardly find any truly helpful resources (apart from all the arpeggios used, but that doesn't help much). Thanks to videos by user thrip (Tim Robinson), I made this video, an improvisation, framed within the song "I Love You", written by Harry Archer. It's played on an Ibanez classical guitar, nylon-strung, so gypsy jazz enthusiasts, please bear with me, I'm getting there (and buying an acoustic is already on the list). I'm trying to improvise by ear mostly, not using prelearned arpeggios, so there's probably flaws and an absence of the gypsy jazz feel. The guitar-to-backing-track ratio is off (the guitar's too quiet, sorry) and there's audible breathing, but that's just how my camera behaves (thank you, buggy Logitech drivers). Helpful commentaries, links to lessons or helpful videos are welcome! And be sure to visit Tim Robinson's site, his playing (besides Django, Joscho Stephan, Stochello and other gypsy jazz greats) really inspires me:http://timrobinsonguitar.com/Backing track thanks to http://nuagesdeswing.free.fr/jouer/i_love_you_ok.htmlFun fact: I fell in love with gypsy jazz when I was about 8 or 9 and heard Tiger Rag in the cartoon Dixieland Droopy (performed by a dixieland band, but it's still the same gypsy jazz melody that you just can't resist...) :D
